As sea level rise increases, there is a growing risk of storm surge in communities across the country. Many local governments are implementing innovative strategies, tools, and processes to better understand these risks, protect their residents, and increase their resilience for the future.
Our latest webinar featured Lisa Foster, Floodplain Administrator for Pinellas County, Florida. Lisa talked through Pinellas County's Vulnerability Assessment, and shared how they have implemented new strategies and maps to ensure they are well prepared for the future.
Pinellas County includes 590 miles of coastline and has a population of approximately one million people. Half of the County is mapped in a floodplain and the geography has made it vulnerable to various types of flooding events. They conducted their Vulnerability Assessment in 2018, which analyzed projections for the next 20, 50, and 100 years. Simultaneously, they collected data on the impacts to infrastructure and buildings in different areas throughout the County. Based on their findings, they started to implement several new initiatives to ensure they are accounting for future conditions in their floodplain management planning.
At the end of the webinar, JT White, Forerunner's CEO, did a brief demo on how The City of Clearwater, which is within the County, is using Forerunner to incorporate and operationalize new maps that Lisa shared.
