Webinar Recap: Adapting Legal Frameworks to Address Climate Change in High Flood Risk Communities
Local governments, especially in flood-prone regions, are pushing forward new initiatives to bolster resilience through stricter regulatory standards – but the path toward more innovative policy can be rocky due to legal barriers.
To shed light on the crucial intersection of law, policy, climate adaptation, and flood risk, we hosted a webinar with Mark Nevitt, Associate Professor of Law at Emory University School of Law. Mark drew from his recently published Stanford Law Review article, breaking down the historical context of our current legal framework to help floodplain managers navigate legal challenges today. He covered the relevant constraints and opportunities, noting the growing importance of flood risk disclosures, spoke about what is achievable for communities, and shared his insights on larger scale legal reform as well.
The presentation is available here. Note: during the presentation, Mark also gave a shout out to the Sabin Center at Columbia University - learn more here.
